Key Ingredients for Authentic French Onion Soup
Onions: Use yellow onions for the best flavor. The onions are slowly caramelized to bring out their natural sweetness and develop a deep, rich flavor.
Butter: Unsalted butter is used to caramelize the onions. It adds a rich, creamy taste to the soup.
Beef Broth: A high-quality beef broth is essential for an authentic French Onion Soup. It provides a savory base that complements the sweetness of the caramelized onions.
White Wine: A splash of dry white wine adds acidity and depth to the soup, enhancing the overall flavor.
Thyme: Fresh thyme adds a fragrant, earthy note to the soup. You can also use dried thyme if fresh is not available.
Bay Leaves: Bay leaves are used to infuse the broth with additional flavor. They are removed before serving.
Baguette: A crusty French baguette is sliced and toasted to serve as a base for the melted cheese topping. I like to use homemade French Baguette, for an even more exquisite and fancy meal!
Gruyère Cheese: Gruyère cheese is traditional for French Onion Soup. But you can also substitute it with mozarella or even cheddar cheese for a less traditional version.
How To Store and Serve?
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat the soup on the stove over medium heat, stirring occasionally.

Expert Tips for the Best Onion Soup
Caramelizing Onions: Take your time when caramelizing the onions. Cook them slowly over low heat to a deep rich color and flavor without burning.
Broth Choice: For the best flavor, use homemade beef broth or a high quality store bought version.
Cheese Topping: For a perfect cheesy topping I love to broil the soup bowls until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown. And you can get creative with the cheese!
Substitutions and Variations
Add Sherry or Wine: For extra depth of flavor, you can add a splash of sherry or white wine to the soup while it simmers. This adds a slight acidity and richness that enhances the overall taste.

Use Vegetable Broth: For a vegetarian version, substitute the beef broth with vegetable broth. This maintains the soup’s hearty flavor while making it suitable for vegetarians.

Add Garlic: For more flavor, add minced garlic to the onions as they caramelize. The garlic pairs very well with the sweetness of the onions and adds an extra layer of taste.

Include Thyme and Bay Leaves: Adding fresh thyme and bay leaves while simmering the soup infuses it with aromatic herbs, deepening the flavor.

Use Different Cheeses: Gruyère is the traditional choice, but, you can also use other cheeses like Swiss Cheese or Mozzarella for the topping.

FAQs
Can I use red onions instead of yellow onions?
Yes, you can use red onions, but they will impart a slightly different flavor and color to the soup. Yellow onions are preferred for their sweetness and traditional flavor.

How can I make the soup ahead of time?
You can prepare the soup up to the point of adding the baguette and cheese. Store the soup in the refrigerator and reheat it on the stove before serving. Add the toasted baguette and cheese just before broiling and serving.
